There once stood on Hunter's Island an old stone house, a portion of which was believed to have been built in the 17th century. Tradition says that the home was the residence of successive owners of the island including John Pugsley, William and Alexander Henderson and even John Hunter who reportedly lived in the house while his famous mansion was being built in the early 19th Century.

The photograph immediately below, from the collections of The Office of The Historian of The Town of Pelham, shows the Old Stone House in 1923. A notation on the back of the original photograph indicates that it depicts what is "probably" the oldest structure still standing in what once was the Manor of Pelham.

The Old Stone House was razed at about the same time as Hunter's Island Mansion in the 1930s.
