New Discoveries Regarding Baseball in 19th Century Pelham
Bell, Blake A., Baseball in Late 19th Century Pelham, The Pelham Weekly,
Vol. XIII, No. 17, Apr. 23, 2004, p. 8, col. 2.
Recently I ran across a brief announcement placed in a New York City
newspaper in 1896 by "The Pelham Baseball Club" challenging other clubs to
play it at City Island on Decoration Day. The announcement appears below.
"WANT TO PLAY GAMES.

The Pelham Baseball Club will meet any team of uniformed players averaging
20 years, games to be played at City Island on Decoration Day. Address
Joseph Byrnes, East Prospect street, City Island, N. Y. . . ."
