1878 Account of Results of Sloop Race Held Off the Pelham Shores

Few in Pelham today realize how strong a maritime tradition Pelham once had.  Situated on Long Island Sound with City Island once an important part of the Town, Pelham was the site of yacht races, yacht building, oystering, recreational fishing and much more.

One interesting little account of a sloop race held off the Pelham Shores in 1878 appears below.  It is particularly interesting because of the names of several of the participants -- noted personalities who once lived or had summer homes in the area.

"SLOOP RACE AT CITY ISLAND. -- Sept. 21, cat-rigged sloops under 15 feet.  Course was from stakeboats at the bridge connecting the island with Rodman's Neck, two and a half miles out into the Sound, around a stakeboat a mile west of Execution Lighthouse, return and repeat, about 10 miles.  Wind light and puffy from southwest.  Lizzie, O. Iselin, 2h. 20m. 30s.:  Nettie, A.F. Vail, 2h. 24m. 40s.: Susie, G. Lambdin, 2h. 28m.; Mary B., S.T. Pell, 2h. 32m. 45s.; Little Pluck, B. Blizzard, and Lulu, C. Fales, withdrew at half distance."
